Jodhpur, India (Mehrangarh Fort)

January 29, 2003
Weather: high of about 85ºF and clear

We hike up the hill from our hotel and spend the day touring Mehrangarh Fort. It is a hot day and thankfully much of the tour is through the cool courtyards and dark stone rooms. Just recently, the fort has begun offering audio tours by means of small MP3 players. The commentary is good and worth the steep donation they ask.

High on the ramparts of the fort there are many cannon. Some of which have been brought here as war booty. Even one from China taken in the Boxer Rebellion.
The blue houses of the old city surround the fort on all sides.

Polo is still a popular game in Jodhpur. At least among the royal family.
After the fort, we hire a tuktuk to take us to the current residence for the Maharaja of Jodhpur: the Umaid Bhawan Palace. It is now part museum, part hotel, and part private residence.
We have dinner outside, watching the sunset over the palace gardens. The end of a long day, and tomorrow we try our luck on the motorcycle again.
